Our Mission & What True Mastery Means

Our Mission

To build your child's Relationship with numbers, never fears a math test, and enters university with the problem-solving stamina to lead in STEM (an interdisciplinary approach to learning that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, moving beyond siloed subjects to foster critical thinking and real-world problem-solving).

"True Mastery"

To ensure a child has a strong relationship with numbers, the solution is Number Talks. Instead of silent worksheets, ask the child: "How many ways can you make the number 10?"

A
Student A

"5 and 5."

B
Student B

"8 and 2."

C
Student C

"A 20 minus a 10."

This flexibility; the ability to "decompose" and "recompose" numbers; is the definition of Foundation Phase mastery. It creates a child who doesn't just do math but thinks mathematically.

Conceptual Understanding (knowing why it works).

What we want

"number explorers"

Not mere

"calculation machines"

In the Foundation Phase, we want children to be "number explorers," not mere "calculation machines."

Cognitive development research

Research in cognitive development (notably Jerome Bruner's work) shows that children in this phase learn best when they move through concrete and pictorial stages before reaching symbols. By jumping straight to symbols, children are left without a "mental image" of what a number actually represents.

FeaturePath to The Integrated Mastery Model (Modern Best Practice)
Primary GoalConceptual Understanding & Reasoning; as opposed to old technology of fixating on calculation speed/accuracy.
Learning PathSpiral: Deepening the same concept
Problem SolvingHeavy focus on "Word Problems"; Not limited to arithmetic.
Child's View"I understand how this number works."

Build that relationship with numbers early

The mastery described above is the goal of every session. See how the programme is structured, and what it costs.
