1. Who we are

MathXL is a service of Mathxl (Pty) Ltd, a company registered in South Africa under registration number 2026/619778/07. In these terms “we”, “us” and “MathXL” mean that company.

Our registered office is at 6 Stockley Road, Kenwyn, Cape Town, Western Cape, 7779, South Africa.

We provide live, small-group online mathematics training for young learners, together with supporting online training material and practice exercises.

You can reach us at support@mathxl.co.za or on 066 018 3756 (+27 66 018 3756). These are the contact details for all questions about these terms, your bookings, billing and privacy.

2. The service we provide

  • Live online classes taught by a trainer, delivered in small groups on a fixed weekly timetable.
  • A three-month learning programme, booked as a whole, at a chosen number of classes per week.
  • Access to online training material and practice exercises for the learner, for the duration of the programme.
  • A parent dashboard showing your learner’s upcoming classes, programme dates and renewal options. Invoices are sent to you by email.

We teach mathematics and aim to build confidence and reasoning. We do not guarantee any particular academic result, mark or placement.

3. Who may use MathXL, and parental responsibility

Accounts are opened by a parent or legal guardian, who must be at least 18. By creating a learner profile you confirm that you are the parent or guardian of that child, or are otherwise authorised to act for them, and that the information you provide about them is accurate.

The learner uses their own sign-in, created by you from your dashboard. You remain responsible for your account and for your learner's use of it, including keeping sign-in details private. Classes involve young children, so a responsible adult should be contactable during class times.

4. Trainers

Trainers apply to join MathXL and provide details of their own qualifications and experience. A trainer cannot teach on the platform until an administrator has reviewed and approved their profile.

We want to be straightforward about this: trainer qualifications are supplied by the trainer and reviewed by us. We do not currently carry out formal background or criminal record checks, and we do not claim to. Classes are online and are conducted through the platform.

5. Prices, fees and payment

Programmes are priced per class, with a separate monthly online-materials fee charged for each enrolled learner. Prices change from time to time, so this page does not list them. The prices and the total amount payable are shown to you during checkout, before you pay. That displayed total is the amount you are charged.

All prices are quoted, and all payments are taken, in South African Rand (ZAR). We do not charge in any other currency. The amount shown at checkout is the final amount payable: no VAT is added, because we are not currently registered for VAT.

Payment is taken through PayFast, or by EFT where offered. Payments are once-off: you pay for a three-month programme up front. We do not store your card details and we do not set up any recurring debit or automatic renewal. Nothing is charged again unless you choose to buy a further programme.

6. When your booking is confirmed

Choosing a class holds a place for a short period while you complete payment. Your booking is only confirmed once payment succeeds, or once we have verified and approved your EFT. Until then the place is not secured.

Places are limited. If a class fills before your payment is confirmed, we will contact you to arrange an alternative class or to return the amount paid.

Once confirmed, we generate your learner's timetable and issue an invoice by email.

7. Timetable, public holidays and the festive closure

Classes run at the same time each week for the length of the programme. We do not hold classes on South African public holidays, or during our festive-season closure, which runs from 20 December until the first Monday of January.

You are not charged for those classes. The programme price is reduced by the fee for each class that falls on one of those days, and the reduction is shown at checkout and on your invoice.

8. If your learner cannot attend

Please tell us as soon as you reasonably can, and always before the class where possible.

Notice must be given by WhatsApp to the learner's trainer, using the link on your dashboard. That is the channel our trainers monitor for attendance, so a message sent any other way may not reach them in time.

Where we can, we will try to arrange a make-up opportunity. This depends on trainer, class and timetable availability, so a make-up class cannot be guaranteed.

Classes run in small groups on a set timetable, so a class the learner misses is ordinarily treated as delivered and no cash refund arises for it. This does not affect any rights you have under applicable law, including the Consumer Protection Act — see our Refund & Cancellation Policy.

9. If we cannot deliver a class

If the assigned trainer is unavailable, we will try to provide a suitable substitute trainer for the scheduled time.

If we cannot, we will not simply treat that class as delivered. We add a replacement class credit to the learner's account and use it to arrange a replacement class. Depending on the circumstances we may instead extend the programme period or reduce the amount payable on a future programme. We choose the remedy, and we tell you which one we have applied.

Where we provide a reasonable replacement of this kind, a cash refund is not ordinarily provided. Again, this does not limit rights you have under applicable law.

10. Class credits

Credits are held against the learner's account and are used to arrange replacement classes, or applied against the amount payable when you buy a further programme. Credits are not cash and are not exchangeable for cash. Credits do not currently expire.

11. Renewing, and ending your programme

Your learner can join live classes during the programme period you have paid for. When that period ends, access to the live classes ends with it.

From 30 days before a programme ends you can renew it, to continue in the same class with the same trainer, or choose a different class. We remind you by email and in the app 30, 14 and 7 days before the end date and on the end date itself. If you have not renewed, we hold your learner's place in the class for 7 days after the programme ends; after that the place may be offered to another learner.

Because payment is once-off, there is nothing to cancel to stop future charges — simply do not buy a further programme. If you want to stop an existing programme, or you have been charged in error, contact us and see the Refund & Cancellation Policy, which sets out what happens in each case.

12. Using the platform properly

You agree not to:

  • share an account, password or class link with anyone outside your household;
  • record, copy, republish or resell our classes, training material or exercises;
  • attempt to access another family’s or trainer’s information;
  • disrupt a class or behave abusively towards a trainer, learner or staff member;
  • interfere with the platform, or attempt to bypass its security or access controls.

The platform, our teaching material and our exercises belong to MathXL and remain ours. You get permission to use them for your own learner, for the duration of the programme, and for no other purpose.

13. How we contact you

We send service messages you need in order to use what you have bought — verifying your email, confirming a booking, invoices and receipts, password resets, and class reminders. These are part of the service and are not marketing.

Reminders and attendance messages may be sent by WhatsApp where you have given us a mobile number for that purpose.

Marketing is separate and optional. We will only send you promotional messages about MathXL if you have separately chosen to receive them, and we will only send you anything from a partner or associate if you have separately agreed to that as well. You can opt out at any time, and choosing not to receive marketing does not affect your learner's training in any way.

14. Learner photographs and achievements

We like to celebrate what learners achieve, whether at MathXL or at school. We may invite you to give separate, optional permission for us to use a photograph or an achievement — for example a strong mathematics result — including on our website or social media.

Accepting these terms does not give us that permission. We will only use a learner's image, name or achievement if you give specific, separate consent for it, and you can withdraw that consent at any time by contacting us. Declining has no effect on your learner's training.

How we would handle that information, if you ever give consent, is set out in our Privacy Policy.

15. Availability and technical problems

Online classes need a working device and a reasonable internet connection at your end, which is your responsibility. We aim to keep the platform available but cannot promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free.

If a class cannot go ahead because of a problem on our side, clause 9 applies and we provide a replacement class credit or another suitable remedy.

16. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, for example where an account or class link is shared, or where a trainer, learner or staff member is treated abusively. Where it is reasonable to do so we will warn you first and give you a chance to put things right. If we close your account for a reason that is not your fault, we will deal fairly with any unused part of what you have paid.

17. Our responsibility to you

We take reasonable care in providing the service. We are responsible for loss that we cause and that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms. We are not responsible for loss that is not foreseeable, or for indirect loss such as lost profits or lost opportunity.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.

18. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The version and effective date at the top of this page tell you which version applies. If a change materially affects you, we will tell you by email or in the platform before it takes effect. Changes are not applied retrospectively to a programme you have already paid for.

19. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and the South African courts have jurisdiction. Your rights under the Consumer Protection Act and the Protection of Personal Information Act are not affected by anything in these terms.

20. Questions or complaints

Contact us at support@mathxl.co.za or 066 018 3756. We aim to acknowledge within two business days.

21. Free Semester Sponsorship

The Free Semester Sponsorship is a limited promotional offer. While it runs, we sponsor one three-month programme, free of charge, for a limited number of families. Our website shows how many places the offer started with and how many are left, and our team updates that number as places are taken.

  • How to take part. Request a callback from the offer on our website. Sending the form does not reserve a place: we will contact you, confirm whether a place is still available and whether your family qualifies, and arrange the programme with you.
  • Please don’t book or pay first. Our team applies the sponsorship once your place is confirmed; it cannot be claimed at checkout. If you have already paid, contact us.
  • When the offer ends. Places are given in the order we confirm them. The offer closes when every place is taken, or earlier if we end it. Ending the offer does not affect a place we have already confirmed with you.
  • After the sponsored semester. Any programme after the sponsored one is charged at our normal prices, and these terms apply as usual, including clause 11 on renewing.
